Tan Ban Seng (1962 - ) currently teaches electronic commerce, IT and other technology related subjects to diploma and advanced diploma students at an institute of higher learning in Singapore. He puts into practise what he teaches in an internet-based business which he manages from home. He is also an IT advisor to an organisation specialising in financial planning and does some website designing and coding as a hobby. If code is poetry and webdesign is artistry, then Ban Seng dreams of being a poet and artist.

Ban Seng loves to teach! He derives great satisfaction seeing light bulbs go on, figuratively speaking, when he “connects” with his students. Beyond just imparting facts and figures, Ban Seng tries to be a coach, a mentor, and an encourager to his students. He has had the privilege of direct contact with learners since 1990 and hopes to see the fruits of his labour before he retires. "Stay in touch with me through tanbanseng dot com" is his frequent refrain to his graduating students.

Ban Seng is uniquely positioned to teach, facilitate and guide students in IT and business IT related fields as he had extensive experience in strategic IT management and scenario planning during his 13-year stay in the National Computer Board (NCB) of Singapore. He has made key contributions to the nationwide IT2000 masterplanning effort and played a key role in the creation of an IT R&D vision in NCB. His practical project management work include managing and completing an online information portal, with a development cost of close to a million dollars. He also negotiated and implemented a multi-million dollar information gateway and carried out the initial scoping of an ambitious billing engine for an information portal.

Ban Seng still keeps track of major developments in IT and technology trends, a habit developed during his years in NCB as a scenario planner. Ban Seng was trained in the Global Business Network (GBN) scenario planning methodology in the United States of America and one of his primary responsibilities was to stay updated on technology developments and to identify long range opportunities and threats.

Ban Seng served two and a half years in the Singapore Armed Forces and he looks back on those times with some nostalgia. He was a sniper with the elite Guards Brigade. Boy was he fit then! Now he is fighting a losing battle of the bulge.

Ban Seng was an NCB Scholar, and has a M.Sc in Management of Technology and a B.Sc in Information Systems and Computer Science, both degrees awarded by the National University of Singapore. Ban Seng completed his Masters degree course with distinction. He graduated top of his class in Information Technology and won the NCB Book Prize.
